The Best Long-Wearing Lipsticks That Actually Stay Put

Like beepers and JNCO jeans, dry, chalky long-wearing lipsticks are behind us. The once -small category has grown exponentially, with almost every makeup brand touting its own new-and-improved version. These 11 are true standouts, delivering serious staying power plus lip-pleasing texture and a wide array of shades.

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick

$28 (hourglasscosmetics.com).

Lightweight and silky, this feels more like a gloss going on, though without any trace of tackiness. The highly pigmented formula is loaded with emollients, locking in both vibrant color and moisture. And while it claims to be matte, we found it to have more of a satin finish, which looked equally pretty in each of the nine shades.

Gucci Lip Sensuous Deep-Matte Lipstick

$40 (saksfifthavenue.com).

Any makeup artist will tell you that matte formulas last longer than glossy formulas, and that's largely due to the fact that they're drier (and thus can make lips look chapped). But despite this newbie's megamatte finish, it went on—and stayed—completely creamy. One coat delivered bold color, which we could buff out with our fingertip for more sheer look. And in true Gucci fashion, the packaging oozes style and sophistication.

Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick

$24 (smashbox.com).

The name says it all. No matter what we did (or ate, or drank) the color stayed put. The box claims the lipstick gives up to eight hours of wear, but we swear we still saw traces of it the next day. A flat, doe-foot tip made application easier than usual, and the selection of 20 shades is impressive.

Cailyn Cocoon Lip Stain

$22 (evine.com).

We've seen lip stains before, but this one takes the cake for its unique peel-and-reveal technology. How it works: Apply a thin layer of the gel-like color on your lips—it's tricky to do straight from the tube, so use a brush—and wait at least ten minutes. Once you see the corners start to lift up, you peel off the newly formed film, revealing perfectly stained lips underneath. It takes a little practice to figure out how much product you need for your desired layer of color, but it's totally worth it for how long the stain lasts (and when you're ready, it comes off easily with a makeup wipe).

Touch in Sol Go Extreme High Definition Lip Lacquer

$18 (urbanoutfiters.com).

We're suckers for Korean-made makeup, and this option is no exception. The formula is a blend of oils and water, giving it a thinner consistency than other lacquers we've tried. Before it was totally dry, it left a mark on our water bottle—just a lip print though, no color—but once it set, it wasn't going anywhere. Our only wish is that there were some more-subdued shades to choose from, since all six are bold and bright.

Lorac Pro Matte Lip Color

$18 (ulta.com).

Unlike the other lip crayons in our makeup bag, this one maintained the shape of its tip without getting smushy, no matter how much we used it. The one angled side also made lining our lips especially easy. The texture is most definitely matte, though it never felt dry, and the added açai, pomegranate, and grape-seed extract are yet another benefit (hey, we'll take our antioxidants however we can get them).

Fiona Stiles Ultrasuede High Intensity Lip Color

$16 (ulta.com).

Celebrity makeup artists understand the necessity of long-lasting lip color, so it's no surprise that Stiles (who has worked with Gabrielle Union, Elizabeth Banks, and Nikki Reed) has one in her new line. The formula looks a little thick coming out of the tube but surprisingly doesn't feel the least bit heavy on your lips. One coat gave us the exact amount of coverage we wanted and dried down to a velvety finish that stayed put all day. The tube itself has a little heft, but since you don't need to carry it around for touch-ups, it's not an issue.

It Cosmetics YLBB Your Lips But Better Waterproof Lip Liner Stain

$20 (itcosmetics.com).

Layering liner underneath lipstick is a tried-and-true trick for prolonging lip color...or you can just use this single multitasking pencil. It's a liner and stain in one, and we liked it equally when we used it to line our lips and when we used it to fill them in entirely. The built-in sharpener is a nice bonus, and the formula also has peptides and hyaluronic acid for a little anti-aging boost.

Jouer Long-Wear Lip Crème Liquid Lipstick

$18 (jouercosmetics.com).

The first thing we noticed was a yummy vanilla scent (and we don't even usually like vanilla). The second was how smoothly it glided onto our lips, even without any lip balm underneath. And finally, most important, was how the color saturated and stayed on our lips. The 15 shades are universally flattering, though we hope the brand adds a darker berry tone to the lineup.

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint

$20 (sephora.com).

It's fitting that one of the colors is called Yaassss, because that's what you'll be saying when you realize just how long this stays on without even the slightest smudge or smear. Because it's a liquefied and concentrated version of a traditional lipstick, the pigments are intense and saturated, not to mention completely mineral-based, in case that's your thing.

Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer Lip Gloss

$38 (giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com).

Both our boss and our mother-in-law recommended this standout, and for good reason. The formula has a high concentration of water-soluble pigments to create a stainlike effect, plus glycerin to keep lips moist. And whereas the majority of long-wearing options are matte, this one has full-on sheen, plus the range of shades includes eight metallic shades with just the right amount of shimmer. Wear it out to dinner and we guarantee that people will comment on how amazing it looks—before and after the meal.

  1. The products itself, are pretty aesthetic looking. Personally, I love the hair oil and hair serum. I don’t have a verdict about the shampoo yet. Everything smells amazing, though. I find myself smelling the oil while passing by my shelves – it’s THAT good.

Neither the hair oil nor the hair serum is greasy | Bare anatomy. My hair doesn’t feel weighed down, and everything is super soft, super bouncy. Of course, it’ll take me about a month of usage to come to a proper decision about everything.
